About

Jacoba is a freelance visual artist based in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, with a focus on painting and drawing. Originally from Germany, she holds a degree in Illustration from University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. Her career includes a number of years in goldsmithery and teaching arts, craft, and history of arts.

Jacoba has exhibited her work in various exhibitions in North Germany and Scotland. Her latest paintings and drawings show portraits of human and humanoid beings and imaginary landscapes which were recently on show in Peebles Library, Museum & Gallery and can still be seen in her studio until 27 September 2024.

Studio Show

Please visit me in my studio to see my recent Peebles exhibition   - leaving the path of classical portraits and landscapes, only to realise that they are portraits and landscapes again.

Never mind!

painting Hamburg,     painting Hawick

My landscape experience for a

number of years: Harbours and sailing vessels. Plein air painting

is still one of my favourites but

now I specialise on hills, horses

and knitting mills...

...or Hawick's High Street.  Not to paint ships any more felt awkward for a while but now it's all good. We do have a river after all, even two, with a big building site on them. I use oils when painting outdoors - they're messy but workable even in a heavy rain.

drawing and sketching

I love it! Sketching is a pleasure, good practice, and a great source for ideas and more elaborate pictures. No tons of kit! Often I draw many versions of an image. I've got a pile of Hawick High Street views.
